What to expect from Alex Binelas in Boston

Must read

The Red Sox and Brewers surprised the baseball world as they swapped outfielders late Wednesday night. The Red Sox sent Hunter Renfroe to Milwaukee for Jackie Bradley Jr. and two prospects, including Alex Binelas. Although the Wisconsin native is still a few years from the majors, he is an intriguing bat.

Entering the MLB Draft, Binelas was drawing plenty of interest. The now 21-year-old burst onto the scene in his freshman year when he hit .291 with 14 home runs. He was named a Freshman All-American and was one of Louisville’s best hitters. In 2020, he was unable to build on his success due to a broken hamate bone. Despite his injury, Binelas bounced back in his final college season.

In 2021, Binelas’ power returned as he hit 19 home runs. He finished his college career with 123 runs batted in and a .272 average. While his pro career has just begun, that power has translated to the minors. It is a welcoming as he joins an organization that has done well with developing hitters.

Following the trade, Binelas is the Red Sox’s 16th best prospect. The former Brewer uses the entire field and has a good eye at the plate. He also tends to enter prolonged slumps when his timing gets messed up. When baseball resumes, consistency will be critical in a Red Sox system that has been on the rise.

What Binelas brings to Boston

Although the Red Sox have a crowded infield, their newest prospect could get some reps in the outfield. In the spring, he struggled defensively at first, and scouts don’t love his footwork. During his college career and lone season in the Milwaukee system, he spent most of his time at third and first base. However, he has the speed to play one of the corner outfield spots.

Regardless of where Binelas plays, hitting is his strength. Through 36 minor league games, he has already hit nine home runs. He has also managed to post a .309 batting average in 159 plate appearances. As the newest Red Sox prospect moves through the system, he will be a player to keep an eye on.
