What Exactly Are The Browns Getting In Amari Cooper?

Must read

It’s comes as no surprises that the Wide Receiver room is in need of a upgrade down in Berea. The departure of OBJ and Jarvis Landry has left a massive void to be filled. The Browns office wasted no time in getting that ball rolling.

Amari Cooper a four time pro bowler from the Dallas Cowboys, he will for sure be sliding into that number one spot but also help out the younger talent coming through. This a huge deal for the Cleveland Browns future.

Who exactly is Amari Cooper?

Amari Cooper born June 17th 1994 first started his football career at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, as a junior he missed much of the season due to injury but still managed 16 catches for 175 yards with four touchdowns. In his final year of High School he hauled in 33 receptions for 722 yards and six touchdowns. Cooper was a player that was going to go far in the NFL.

Cooper wasn’t short of college offers but he eventually chose Alabama over Florida StateMiami, and Ohio State.

During his freshman year he played in all 14 games and even had 9 starts, He led the team with 59 receptions for 1,000 yards and 11touchdowns. During his freshman year he was already breaking records, his 11 touchdowns broke Alabama’s 62-year-old record by Al Lary and  his receptions and receiving yards broke Julio Jones Alabama freshman records.

Going into his Sophomore year there was a lot of hype around Cooper and if he was really that good of a player. He played in 12 games only missing 2 to an injury, he had 45 receptions for a team-high 736 yards and four touchdowns.

During his final year in college he was breaking all kinds of records, he broke  Alabama’s single game receiving yards record. For the season, Cooper had 124 receptions for 1,727 yards and 16 touchdowns. He became Alabama’s all-time leader in receptions (228), receiving yards (3,463), and receiving touchdowns (31).

Now tell me this isn’t a player that is going to go far in the NFL.

Cooper NFL Career So Far.

Cooper was considered one of the best wide receivers going into the 2015 draft, some mock drafts even had him in the top ten.

The Oakland Raiders picked Cooper as the fourth overall pick. His first season was a success you could say he was breaking records yet again he became the first rookie in franchise history to reach the 1,000-yard mark,  His five 100+ yard receiving games and 72 receptions are also franchise rookie records. In his first professional season he had 72 receptions for 1,070 yards with 8 touchdowns.

Amari Cooper went on to play four seasons with the Raiders totalling up 225 receptions for over 3000 yards with 19 touchdowns, the last few years were a struggle for Cooper, he was struggling for game time and even suffered with an ankle injury.

The Dallas Cowboys were the next place Cooper would call home. During the 2018 season he played 15 games for both the Raiders and the Cowboys he accumulated 75 receptions, 1,005 yards, and seven touchdown receptions. During this season he managed to earn 2 NFC Offensive Player of the Week awards.

The 2019 season was the career highlight for a young Cooper he ranked up 79 receptions for a career-high 1,189 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 games. This was a player that finally felt like he belonged on a team and he was able to play the way he wanted.

Throughout his career so far in the NFL Cooper has 517 receptions for over 7000 yards with 46 touchdowns. This is only going to get higher now he is on the Browns team.

Is Amari Cooper Really Worth The Money?

It’s no lie that trading for Amari Cooper has come with a hefty price tag which is exactly why Dallas wanted to trade him. He’s due to make $20M in 2022 which makes him one of the highest players on the Browns roster.

Taking Cooper would mean saying goodbye to Landry as a huge Landry fan seeing him go hurts a little, I just hope Cooper is worth the hype.

There is always an upside to trades like this, Cooper is definitely in the prime of his career at age 27 and has rarely had any injuries that’s a huge bonus for the Browns. He is also a WR that the Browns have been missing since they lost OBJ.

Let’s not forget that Cooper managed 68 receptions for 865 yards and 8 touchdowns in a Dallas offense littered with receiving options, he was never the number one choice , He was often the number two or three target behind WR Ceedee Lamb and tight end Dalton Shultz, and was also competing for catches with WR Michael Gallup. Coming into the Browns he will be the number one WR.

Cooper is known as one of the best if not the best route runner and the Browns are missing that. He’s got good downfield speed and while he struggled with dropped passes in the past, he seems to have put that problem behind him. Cooper is still very much a top-tier NFL wide receiver and, while he struggled slightly last season, he still had a much better year than any Browns receiver.

The wide receiver room is the major upgrade that is need in Berea, is Amari going to help take this team to the Superbowl? Only time will tell.
