Besides the New Year Six matchups and the College Football Playoff, this might be the game of the bowl season. We have two non-power five teams that have spent time in the top 25 this year battling in this one. The matchup is UTSA (12-1) going up against San Diego State (11-2). Conference USA Champion going up against the Mountain West runner up. This matchup is a must watch and with that being said here is my preview for the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl.
UTSA
The UTSA Roadrunners are here, and they are a team that has been fun to watch in 2021. Offensively, they have a running back that will for sure be playing on Sundays next year in Sincere McCormick. McCormick however is forgoing the Bowl game to prepare for the NFL Draft. That is a huge loss for the Roadrunners as he was sixth in the nation in rushing yards and added fifteen rushing touchdowns along the way. Quarterback Frank Harris will be relied heavy in this game for this UTSA offense. This UTSA offense is ranked twelfth in the nation in points per game (37.8 PPG) and there is a sign that they don’t slow down in this one.
The Roadrunners will have their hands full though with this Aztec defense. San Diego State is very good at stopping the run as they are ranked fourth in the country when it comes to fewest rushing yards allowed per game. This Aztec defense is very good, and with no McCormick the UTSA offense will have to get creative in order to get the win against the Aztecs.
San Diego State
Brady Hoke’s second stint at San Diego State has been a thousand times better than the first stint. The Aztecs were a force this season and the defense was huge for them. Hoke has done the best with his situation as this San Diego State team loves to control the time of possession. Inconsistencies at quarterback make it a struggle for most teams, but not San Diego State. This running game is led by their leading rusher Greg Bell, but their offensive line has been a big key for them this year. Two standouts up front are on the left side of their line. Tackle Zachary Thomas and guard William Dunkle are two essential parts to this offense.
There hasn’t been a consistent quarterback for the Aztecs all year as Hoke has ridden the hot hand. That would be detrimental to most teams, but for the Aztecs they rattled off 11 wins this season and made it to the Mountain West title game. The accomplishments have been pretty incredible for San Diego State. This offense will try to keep the formula the same in order to win this bowl matchup against UTSA.
Prediction:
San Diego State are 2.5-point favorites with the over/under set at 49 at the moment. My lean here is San Diego State -2.5, I think UTSA will struggle to get their offense going against this Aztec defense and by the time they do it will be too late. Official play is under 49 for me. I hate it more than you, but both offenses struggle in this one and San Diego State win a 17-14 type of game. Ride the under in this one as it is the only play that makes sense.
