Another bowl game that people thought we weren’t going to see was the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. With the University of Miami dropping out after due to not being able to field a team due to covid-19. Then the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl got cancelled when Boise State had to drop out due to also not being able to field a team due to covid-19. So the NCAA did what they do best and that was adjust.
Now we have the two teams that were cancelled on facing off against one another at the Sun Bowl. The matchup is between Washington State (7-5) and Central Michigan (8-4). I am very curious with this matchup because the last time the NCAA put a game on the fly like this it was last year with BYU taking on Coastal Carolina and that was one of the games of the season. So with that being here is my preview for the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.
Washington State
The Cougars were in the running up until the last week of the regular season to play for the Pac 12 title. After losing three out of their first four, the Cougars ended up winning six out of their last eight games. This Cougars offense averages 28.4 points per game to go along with 259.8 passing yards a game and for total yards of offense per game they average just over 400 yards of offense per game. The Cougars offense is led by quarterback Jason de Laura who has thrown for 2,751 passing yards to go along with 23 passing touchdowns and 9 interceptions. With the way that the Cougars play style is offensively could create some trouble for the Central Michigan defense.
Defensively, the Cougars are average to say the least. They give up just under 160 rushing yards per game and only give up 24.3 points per game as well. This defense gives up 390.3 total yards of offense per game as well. The lack of preparation that this team has I expect the defense to struggle a little bit in this matchup with Central Michigan.
Central Michigan
Central Michigan is a fantastic offense that deserves the chance to show how good they actually are. They are getting that chance against Washington State in the Sun Bowl. The Chippewas offense average 466.4 total yards of offense which is tied for 24th in the nation. This offense is well balanced as passing the football and running the football they are very good at. Central Michigan is led by quarterback Daniel Richardson. Richardson threw for 2,424 passing yards to go along with 23 passing touchdowns and 5 interceptions. This offense also plays very well due to running back Lew Nichols. Nichols rushed for 1,710 rushing yards (most in the nation) and added 15 rushing touchdowns as well. Central Michigan’s offense is solid and will create some problems for Washington State.
Defensively, the Chippewas is good against the run as they only give up 128.2 rushing yards per game. However, they struggle from time to time against the pass as they give up 266.2 passing yards per game as well. The only worry for me about this defense is the fact that they aren’t getting to El Paso until the day before the game. Central Michigan will need to adjust on the fly in this one defensively in order to compete in this one.
Prediction:
Washington State is a 7 point favorite with the over/under set at 57.5. My lean is Central Michigan +7 as I see this being a very close matchup here. So as I am staying from the line I was going to focus on the total. My official play here is over 57.5. Both offenses can score at will here and I don’t think there will be many defensive stops in this one. Ride the over all the way to the bank tonight.
