The Boston Red Sox are looking to build off of their ALCS appearance in 2021. This was a team that projected to finish right around .500 just a season ago. Now? They’re looking forward to getting back at it (assuming a season happens) and show the world that 2021 wasn’t a fluke. To do that, they need everyone on board. So it got me thinking about three guys to look out for in the 2022 season. So why not get into the topic right, shall we?
Red Sox Player #1 to Look Out for in 2022: Christian Vazquez
Christian Vazquez is a guy that is coming off a pretty good season. He hit .258 with six homeruns and 49 RBI’s. The big thing here is that Vazquez is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Will he re-sign in Boston or will he go elsewhere? So this 2022 season is very telling for Vazquez’s future. Do well and earn a big contract. Stink up the ballpark and the options become limited. 2022 will be a make or break season for Christian Vazquez.
Player #2: Jarren Duran
Remember how excited we all were for Jarren Duran to get called up? I still am hopeful he can be a long-term piece for this Red Sox team. 2022 would be a good starting point. Duran has the speed at the MLB level. The question is: can he hit consistently at the MLB level? We saw flashes of it last year. If the Red Sox want to fire on all cylinders, Duran is going to be a big part of the long-term future of this team.
Player #3 Matt Barnes
The Red Sox need Matt Barnes to be effective for all of 2022. He was the tale of two closers in 2021. The first half of the season, he was an All-star closer. The second half of the season, yeah…he wasn’t good. He was so bad he got demoted from the closer role. So now, Matt Barnes needs to re-find his mojo that he had for the first half of 2021 and be able to sustain it for a full 2022 season. Otherwise, the Red Sox will have the same closer problem that they had for the whole second half of 2022.
