The Bruins announced early Monday that they have resigned center Patrice Bergeron to a one-year deal. Followed shortly by an announcement that they have also signed former Bruin David Krejci to a two-year deal. For Bergeron, the new deal is one-year with a salary cap hit of $2 million and $2.5 million in performance bonuses. For Krejci, the new deal is a one-year deal with a salary cap hit of $1 million per season and the potential for $2 million in performance bonuses. A huge sigh of relief can be felt throughout Bruins nation.
The impact of Bergeron and Krejci’s return for the Bruins
Bergeron is entering his 19th season with the Bruins and has shown no signs of slowing down after another Selke winning season in 2021-2022. Bergeron will look to clear the 1000-point mark in his career as well this season, as he currently sits at 982 points. Krejci returns from one year in the Czech Extraliga and immediately slots back in as the Bruins second line center.
Bergeron and Krejci are signed but what is next for the Bruins?
With Bergeron and Krejci signed, the next task for the Bruins will be signing newly acquired forward Pavel Zacha. Zacha, who was acquired last month in a deal for forward Erik Haula, is a restricted free agent who is heading for salary arbitration on August 11th. Per CapFriendly, the Bruins now have roughly $1.25 million left in cap space this season. Zacha will command more than that; therefore, Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney will have to get creative. Long term injury reserve can be exploited as a result of forward Brad Marchand and defenseman Charlie McAvoy, as both are out until at least November. However, Sweeney will have to make the Bruins cap compliant as they will return before the NHL’s trade deadline.
