It is official, Spencer Rattler has found a new home for the 2022 NCAAF season.
Rattler will officially be a member of the University of South Carolina football team. This move definitely comes as a surprise to many. His time at the University of Oklahoma hac ran its course so it wasn’t a surprise when he announced he was transferring. What is surprising is where he transferred to from Oklahoma. Many thought that Rattler was going to head back home to Arizona to play for Herm Edwards and Arizona State. However, that is not the case, and he ends up heading to South Carolina that could use a quarterback.
South Carolina After The Transfer
The Gamecocks are coming off of a 6-6 season with first year head coach Shane Beamer. South Carolina made a bowl game this season and is playing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against North Carolina. Some will see the addition of Spencer Rattler as a big deal for South Carolina. With the inconsistencies at quarterback this year for South Carolina, how good could this team be with a solid quarterback? With the addition of the name Spencer Rattler, South Carolina becomes very interesting in 2022. Will they contend for the SEC Championship? Does Rattler help make that offense better? A lot of questions will be asked all off-season for South Carolina when it comes to their new starting quarterback.
Rattler’s 2023 NFL Draft Stock
Spencer Rattler’s draft stock took a huge hit this year after Rattler’s down year at Oklahoma. Rattler played in nine games while accumulating only 1,483 passing yards to go along with 11 passing touchdowns to 5 interceptions. It was weird to see a quarterback in Lincoln Riley’s system struggle to put up some insane numbers. Rattler coming into his sophomore season looked like he was going to be a first round draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. However, with the season progressing the way it did there was no chance that he was a first round talent this season.
Now does that mean he doesn’t have a shot at getting his draft stock back up after a solid 2022 season. Not necessarily, South Carolina has a couple of talented wide receivers in Xavier Legette and Dakereon Joyner who will both be seniors next season. They will need to get a running back to help carry the load as their top two running backs on the depth chart are graduating. Right now, I see Rattler’s stock at being the fourth best quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft class. Having him behind the likes of Bryce Young, Grayson McCall and Anthony Richardson. If he does well in the SEC in 2022, I could see him working his way back up as a first round NFL Draft pick.
Final Thought
I am curious to see how this partnership works out for both sides. South Carolina could be a fun team to watch next season, but there will be doubts along the way knowing everything that happened in Oklahoma last year with Rattler as the starter. South Carolina fans beware of what he could do to you. The ceiling is there where he could help lead you to a New Year’s Six bowl game next season. Just don’t be upset if he continues the path that he is on and that he struggles to put together a good season.
