Practically every Christmas season since the internet became widely used, “Die Hard” is brought up. Since it takes place during the Christmas season, but feel wildly different from every other “Christmas movie,” much debate has taken place on whether it counts as a Christmas move or not. There seems to be a general consensus at this point, but not everyone is convinced. For those people, here is why “Die Hard” should be considered a Christmas movie.
1. “Die Hard” Takes Place During The Christmas Season
This is probably the strongest point in the movie’s favor. This is probably the main requirement for a Christmas movie, and it checks the box here. The setting is a Christmas party gone wrong, all things considered, so it’s hard to argue it not being relevant to Christmas in that respect.
2. One of the Major Motifs is Family
In “Die Hard,” main character John McClane’s whole motivation for coming to Los Angeles in the first place was to join his estranged family during the holiday season. And in the end, he finally gets to do that. Just because he had to fight some international criminals along the way, doesn’t mean that’s not his whole goal.
3. It Has Christmas Music
Most any movie that has Christmas music is going to at least give “Die Hard” some points towards it being a Christmas movie. They could have had a movie taking place during Christmas but not played any Christmas music. But they decided to play Christmas songs throughout the movie, lending even more to the idea that this is, in fact, a Christmas movie.
4. Snow
The fact that it snows at the end of “Die Hard,” which takes place in LA, is another point in its favor. It never snows in LA! It has to be considered a Christmas miracle. No other explanation.
And there you have it! “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie, and anyone that says otherwise is fooling themselves. No more questions.
