On Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox continued to improve their depth. In the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 draft, Boston selected two pitchers, Austin Lambright and Brian Keller. While they both have upside, Keller is coming off an impressive 2021 campaign.
In 26 games, Keller posted a 2.77 ERA. He held opponents to a .214 average and only allowed three home runs. While he had issues with control, the Wisconsin native struck out 65 batters. In his first taste of Triple-A action, Keller was not overwhelmed by the increased pressure and improved as the season went on.
Additionally, Keller only allowed two earned runs in the season’s final three months. The former 39th round pick showed why he has steadily moved through the Yankees system. While he may not start next season in the majors, the Red Sox are hoping that they have found Garret Whitlock 2.0.
Through 444.1 innings of work in the minors, Keller has posted a 3.16 ERA. Opponents have never hit better than .253 against him in a season, and he has only allowed 26 home runs. As the Red Sox look to improve his control, Keller brings plenty of promise. As he has moved closer to the majors, Kellers has exceeded expectations.
What to expect from Keller
Before the Yankees selected Keller in the second-to-last round of the draft of the 2016 MLB Draft, he was unsure his name would be called. His fastball sat in the low 90’s which is no longer the case. The 2016 draftee has increased his velocity and generated more swings and misses. He has also been more willing to attack the zone, especially against high-level hitters.
While the 2022 season is full of uncertainty, Keller will be a prospect to keep an eye on in the Red Sox system when the lockout ends. The right-hander is expected to start the season in Triple-A and will be just one call away from making his MLB debut.
