Ranking: Top Five Canadian Women Hockey Players

Must read

In honor of #IWD22, I am going to be ranking my favorite Canadian Women hockey players of all time. But first, happy International Women’s Day to all my fellow amazing, strong and brave women! I’m sure most of us remember but in case you have somehow forgotten, the Canadian Women hockey team won gold in the Winter Olympics last month (Marie Philip Poulin for Prime Minister?!)

Hockey and Canada go together like peanut butter and jelly, so lets get right into it.

Fifth

In fifth place is the uber talented Cassie Campbell-Pascall. Campbell-Pascall is a 3 time Olympic medalist and was captain of the Canadian National Women’s Team from 2001-2006. As if these accomplishments are not amazing enough, she was also the first women’s hockey player to be inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Currently, Cassie is a NHL analyst and personally, I absolutely love hearing her as a commentator during games.

Fourth

Emilie Castonguay is an all around star. She was formerly a sports agent, well-known for being the agent of Alexis Lafreniere and Marie Philip Poulin. Born in Montreal, Quebec,  Castonguay played Division I hockey at Niagara University. After receiving her degree, she went on to become a member of the Quebec Bar Association. Currently, she is the assistant general manager for the Vancouver Canucks, making her the first woman assistant GM in Canucks history. Go Emily!

Third

Hayley Wickenheiser cracks the top three for me for many reasons. Hayley has represented Canada in the Winter Olympics five times and received a gold medal four of out of those five times (silver medal for the fifth). Wickenheiser was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019, which happened to be her first year of eligibility. Not to mention, she became a doctor during a global pandemic and is currently the head of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Overall, incredible hockey player and an even more incredible human.

Second

At only 27 years of age, Sarah Nurse is making a name for herself in the Canadian hockey world. Nurse has been to two Olympic games, where she has won silver and gold for Canada, respectively. She is an incredible athlete and such a good role model for young women looking to go far in their own hockey careers. Good athletic genes must run in the Nurse family; her cousins play in the NHL and WNBA. Cannot wait to watch Nurse do great things for many years to come.

First

If you’re Canadian and you think someone else should be #1 on this list… Please let me know. For me, this is an absolute no-brainer. Marie Philip Poulin is an absolute force who not to be messed with. In the last 3 out of 4 Olympic games she has been a part of, MPP has scored a goal in the gold medal game. At only 30 years of age, she has served as the captain of Team Canada since 2015. I could go on and on about this queen but I will simply leave it at this: Marie Philip Poulin is considered to be one of the best women’s hockey stars of all time and I’m looking forward to seeing her play & dominate as she does going forward in the hockey world.

Thanks for reading! Canadian women’s hockey is starting to grow a very large fan base in the great white North and I cannot wait to see all the progress and exciting play that these ladies provide for us.
