The NFL Draft has come and gone with the New England Patriots making a number of selections. The Patriots used their second round pick to take wide receiver Tyquan Thornton out of Baylor. Something the Patriots needed coming into the draft was a wide receiver. Sure, they traded for DeVante Parker earlier this off-season. But the Patriots needed to add more. So they did! Let’s take a look at a few things to know about Patriots new WR Tyquan Thornton.
New Patriots Wide Receiver Tyquan Thornton Has SPEED
If there’s one thing the Patriots needed in general, it was young talent with speed. They got that in Tyquan Thornton. Thornton ran a 4.28 40 yard dash at the NFL combine. That isn’t slow by any means folks! Thornton shows he can create separation down the field, which is something this Patriots offense desperately needs. So adding a speed guy with receivers like Parker, Jakobi Meyers, and Kendrick Bourne in the fold; it only makes the offense that much better. It’ll be interesting to see if Thornton has some burner moments on corners and defensive backs as soon as 2022.
Tyquan Thornton Gives Mac Jones and the Patriots Another Weapon
Mac Jones needs a lot of weapons around him. He’s a good quarterback, but not a quarterback that can get by without decent talent. Thornton brings a young presence with his speed into the fold. Mac Jones and Tyquan Thornton can develop a relationship that can last the next decade if all goes according to plan. The more weapons on offense, the better for this Patriots offense. If we want to see Mac take a big jump in year two, adding weapons like Tyquan Thornton can only help.
In Conclusion
I’ll be the first to admit, I didn’t know how to respond to this pick. I wanted John Metchie III, but he was taken by Houston earlier. But after seeing the highlights and hearing analysis, it makes me excited to see him in training camp. Will Thornton make an immediate impact or will he need time to develop? Time will tell.
