The NBA season is winding down and the Boston Celtics are looking toward the NBA playoffs. They’ll have a home court advantage in their first round matchup, whoever they play against. But there’s one other thing people are talking about: awards! Specifically, the Defensive Player of the Year award. It’s typically a big man award. The big men get all of the rebounds, the blocks, the glory essentially. But I’m here to tell you today friends, that Celtics point guard Marcus Smart should be the NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Don’t believe me yet? Let me give you a few reasons as to why.
Marcus Smart can help the Celtics Defense by Guarding All 5 Positions
Whether or not you want to believe it, Marcus Smart is a vital member of the Celtics defense. He can cover all five positions. Need somebody to cover Kyrie Irving or James Harden? Smart can handle it no problem. How about a guy like LeBron or Anthony Davis? Smart has you covered! The big men like Jokic or Embiid? Once again, Smart has you covered. It’s all heart with Smart. Along with great positioning and not being afraid to embrace contact, which can also lead to offensive charges in favor of the Celtics. There aren’t too many players that can legitimately guard all five positions in the NBA. Marcus Smart CAN indeed do just that.
Just Look at Marcus Smart’s Defensive Numbers!
The Celtics lead the NBA with a defensive rating of 106.2

The steals, the blocks, the defensive presence…it all adds up for Marcus Smart. He’s always up there in terms of steals and defensive rating anyway. Diving for loose balls doesn’t go unnoticed either! 1st in loose balls recovered per game and 4th in loose balls recovered? That’s an extra possession that can win or lose a game! Smart does all of the little things on the defensive end of the floor. The numbers back it up. It’s time to recognize and acknowledge him!
In Conclusion
Guards hardly get recognition in this category. The last guy I can remember to win the award. Gary “The Glove” Payton. In fact, Payton even is advertising for Smart to win the award. Pretty good company to have on your side! So there you have it, Marcus Smart should be your NBA Defensive Player of the Year!
