Things already weren’t looking good for a quick resolution between the MLB and the Players’ Association on a new CBA. And now, we just found out the MLB used two different balls this season without any prior notification:

Two Different Baseballs?
A lot has been already been made about the MLB changing the balls year to year, in particular it’s correlation to the amount of home runs hit, and the fact that the MLB decided to have two balls in circulation at the same time will not sit well with the players.
Why Does it Matter?
The MLB might try to pin the issue on COVID and it’s ability to source balls, but Dr. Meredith Wills, who did the research on the differences between the MLB’s baseballs, found that both balls were in production at the same time.
The difference between the two balls is one of weight – the new balls the MLB said would be in circulation this past year would be lighter than before and therefore “deader” – potentially leading to fewer home runs and more balls in play instead. So, the type of ball used could have some significant impact on the result of a batted ball. That’s something that could affect games, stats, standings, and even playoff series!
There are plenty of other things the players will want to see done before the ball situation is addressed, but this could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back on any quick negotiations. Hopefully I’m wrong, but I have a feeling I’m not.
