The second college football playoff matchup will take place at the Capital One Orange Bowl. The matchup is between the number three team in the country and the number two team in the country. We got the Big Ten going up against the SEC in this College Football Playoff matchup. The two teams in this matchup is Michigan (12-1) and Georgia (12-1). This is a matchup that I am beyond excited for as I think this matchup could be the game of the season. With that being said here is my preview for the Capital One Orange Bowl.
Michigan
The Michigan Wolverines were a team that I was keeping my eye on early on this season. I thought that they had some real potential to contend for the College Football Playoff and boy was I right. This Jim Harbaugh led team finally lived up to all the expectations that he had set when he started as the head coach of the University of Michigan. He finally beat Ohio State and now he is playing for a chance to get in the national championship game. This Michigan offense is a key reason why they have been successful in 2021. They average 223.8 rushing yards per game and average 37.7 points per game as well. This offense is led by running back Hassan Haskins. Haskins rushed for 1,288 rushing yards and added 20 rushing touchdowns as well. He is a focal point of this offense and this offense flows through the running game.
Defensively, this Michigan defense is great all-around. They give up only 16.1 points per game and give up just over 120 rushing yards per game. They also allow fewer than 200 passing yards per game as well. This defense is going to be huge in this bowl game. If Michigan can contain that Georgia offense, this will be a good overall performance for the Wolverines. Look for guys like Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo to do what they can to put pressure on Georgia’s quarterback.
Georgia
This Georgia offense this season put up a ton of points, but they weren’t as successful as they thought they would be. I think the real key of this Georgia team is their defense. This defense allows 9.5 points per game, yes you read that right they are that good. They give up the 6th fewest rushing yards per game (81.7), the 18th fewest passing yards per game (172.6) and the 12th fewest amount of total yards per game as well (279.3). This collective group might be one of the best defenses that college football has ever seen. I think they have a chance to be, but they have to solidify it in this bowl game against Georgia.
Prediction:
Georgia is a 7.5 point favorite with the over/under set at 45.5 My lean is the over as I think both offenses could produce, but I am still worries about the total as a whole. So we stay away from the total and head straight for the line. The official play is Michigan +7.5. Don’t overthink it just take the points as this will be a one possession game. I think both sides have a real chance of winning this game, but I think this is a one score game at the end of it all. This will be a great game and you should do your best to watch this one on New Year’s Eve. It will be a great last game of 2021 to watch.
